At John of Gaunt Infant School, we are proud to have an active School Council which gives every child a voice in shaping school life.
We use the Smart School Council model to run our meetings. As part of this, our School Council is also known as the Communication Team. Their role is to lead and organise weekly class meetings where all pupils take part in discussions on a different topic. This means that instead of decisions being made by just a few representatives, every child has the chance to share their views and make their voice heard.
The Smart School Council approach also places a strong emphasis on oracy at a whole-school level. Through these Class Meetings, children regularly practise speaking, listening, and explaining their ideas, helping them to develop confidence and effective communication skills.
Our School Council also works in partnership with Bure Valley School Council. Each week, representatives from both schools come together to share ideas and work on joint projects. This collaboration helps the children to think beyond their own school and see how their ideas can make a difference in the wider community.
The School Council is led by Mrs Graveling, who supports the Communication Team in running meetings, gathering ideas, and putting plans into action.
At John of Gaunt, we believe our School Council is a valuable way for children to learn about democracy, teamwork, responsibility, and oracy – all while making their school an even better place to be.
